Embassy of Canada to Thailand Visits Suranaree University of Technology to Strengthen Academic and Research Partnerships

Delegates from the Embassy of Canada to Thailand, Mr. Frank Le, Counsellor (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner, and Ms. Nitchawan Sriviboone, Trade Commissioner, officially visited Suranaree University of Technology (SUT). The strategic meeting was convened to strengthen ongoing partnerships and align strategic priorities in science, technology, and innovation, as well as to follow up on SUT's collaboration efforts with Canadian institutions.

The session brought together key SUT representatives from Technopolis, Digitech, Engineering, Science, the Quantum Technology Research Initiative Collaborations (QTRic), and the Center for International Affairs (CIA). Discussions highlighted the evolving landscape of international education, where institutions are increasingly shifting beyond traditional exchange models toward integrated frameworks such as transnational and dual-degree programs, articulation pathways, and joint research initiatives. The Canadian delegation expressed openness to these approaches, recognizing their significant potential to enhance long-term academic and institutional collaboration.

During the meeting, a wide range of proposals across key disciplines were presented, encompassing engineering, digital sciences, biotechnology, and agricultural technology. These proposals emphasized collaborative research, student mobility, and the co-development of academic programs. Notable initiatives included the development of project-based learning exchanges, joint supervision in digital and cybersecurity fields, and applied research in sustainable agriculture and food technology. A major focus was also placed on SUT's emerging quantum technology initiative, which aims to position Thailand as a regional hub through the development of quantum applications and innovation ecosystems. This vision received strong support from the Canadian representatives, who identified potential linkages with leading quantum research networks and industry partners.

Concluding the session, the Canadian delegates provided constructive feedback and outlined practical pathways for future collaboration. These pathways include connections to research funding bodies, commercialization programs, and institutional partnerships. Opportunities such as the upcoming Global Research Council meeting and new postdoctoral fellowship schemes were also identified as key platforms for further engagement. The meeting wrapped up with a set of actionable steps for both parties, reinforcing a shared commitment to fostering sustainable partnerships, enhancing research collaboration, and promoting robust innovation across various sectors.
