Institute of Dental Surgery

Institute of Dental Surgery (ID), Suranaree University of Technology (SUT): A Hub for Dental Exploration.

Background:

In January 1995, Institute of Medicine at Suranaree University of Technology initiated a comprehensive health science system project, comprising Institute of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing Science, and a medical center. The initial phase focused on establishing the Institute of Medicine, with plans for subsequent development involving Institute of Nursing Science and the medical center. The goal was to address the shortage of higher education personnel in the fields of medicine, nursing, and medical technology. Unfortunately, due to economic challenges faced by Thailand in 1997, the project had to be temporarily postponed.

Later, the initiative gained momentum, and in 2014, the Institute of Dentistry submitted an accreditation request to the Dental Council for its Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Approval was granted at the 8th meeting in 2015, held on April 9, 2015, certifying the Doctor of Dental Surgery program under the new curriculum implemented in 2015.

Institute of Dentistry at Suranaree University of Technology initially had five teachers. In the 2015 academic year, the school admitted 30 first-generation dental students, even before receiving government funding, as the approval was still under consideration. The focus was on recruiting students from various provinces in the northeastern region, prioritizing those from Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Buriram, and Surin provinces. Additionally, the school adopted a policy to admit bachelor's degree graduates in science or related health sciences, exempting them from certain general education subjects studied in the first year. These students would enter directly at the end of the first year to continue their studies in subjects crucial for the second year. Institute of Dentistry at Suranaree University of Technology stands as the 11th state-run institution producing dentists and the 13th in Thailand overall.
