Institute of Public Health (IHP), Suranaree University of Technology (SUT): A Hub for Public Health Exploration

Background:

The production of public health personnel at Suranaree University of Technology commenced in 1998 when the Institute of Medicine introduced an undergraduate curriculum focused on the Public Health subject group, specifically the Bachelor of Science program. The Department of Environmental Health and the Department of Occupational Health and Safety were established as part of this initiative. Approval for the course was granted during the Academic Council meeting No. 8/1998 on November 25, 1998, and the new curriculum was implemented from the academic year 1999 onward. Initially, both curricula were administered under Institute of Medicine's structure, undergoing revisions in 2003, 2011, and 2016 in alignment with the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (CMU).

In the 2011 academic year, the Department of Environmental Health introduced a graduate-level program, the Master of Science (Environmental Pollution and Safety Major). Subsequently, during the Academic Council meeting No. 4/2015 on April 30, 2015, the university approved (draft) the establishment of Institute of Public Health and Institute of Medicine. A working group was formed to oversee the establishment of the Institute of Public Health, as outlined in Institute of Medicine Order No. 41/2015 dated September 23, 2015. The working group developed an institutional research project proposal titled "Study of alternatives and feasibility in establishing Institute of Public Health, Suranaree University of Technology," which gained approval from the Institutional Research Committee on December 9, 2015. The proposal was then presented to the University Council for information.

The Suranaree University of Technology Council Meeting No. 3/2017 on May 27, 2017, saw the approval of the establishment of Institute of Public Health to meet national development needs. Regulations concerning Institute of Public Health, effective on June 18, 2017, were issued, along with the announcement of the division of work (No. 4) 2017. Institute of Public Health's organizational structure comprises the Office of the Dean, the Department of Environmental Health, the Department of Occupational Health and Safety, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, and research institutes. Officially established on June 18, 2017, Institute of Public Health, also known as the Institute of Public Health (IPH) in English, stands as the 8th school within Suranaree University of Technology.
