Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) reinforces its excellence in research and innovation as the "Agricultural Waste into Gemstones" project, led by Associate Professor Dr. Siriwan Chokkha, advanced past competitors from a pool of nearly 900 higher education institutions across Asia to become one of the top eight finalists in the STEM category. SUT also extends its warmest congratulations to the Thai institutions that triumphed on this prestigious stage.

Following the announcement of THE Awards Asia 2026—widely recognized as the "Oscars of Higher Education"—on April 22 in Hong Kong, Suranaree University of Technology has celebrated a significant milestone in bringing Thai research to the international forefront. The innovative project spearheaded by Associate Professor Dr. Siriwan Chokkha from the School of Ceramic Engineering, Institute of Engineering, along with her team, was officially shortlisted as a finalist for the Research Project of the Year: STEM category.

This achievement is an immense source of pride. This year's overarching assessment included nearly 900 leading universities from around 35 countries across Asia, with over 500 outstanding entries submitted for the awards. Out of these, only 80 submissions from 17 countries and territories successfully advanced to the final round. As a representative of Thailand, SUT stood out with its STEM-based solution that converts agricultural waste into high-purity silica to reproduce gemstone crystal structures. This innovation not only helps mitigate PM 2.5 pollution caused by agricultural burning but also generates sustainable circular-economy value for local communities.

Although SUT did not take home the ultimate winning title this year, the university expresses its utmost admiration and extends heartfelt congratulations to all the winning institutions. A special commendation goes to the higher education institutions from Thailand whose collective successes have brought honor to the nation, proving that the caliber of Thai education and research is robust and globally recognized.

Suranaree University of Technology and the research team vow to never stop improving. The university remains steadfast in its dedication to advancing research and fostering new innovations that create a positive, lasting impact on society and the environment. SUT extends its deepest gratitude for all the support and encouragement received during this prestigious
